Highgate West Hill

California living in London.

Project description

Accessed through a discreet side-passage from West Hill, the existing 1950s house featured the rare addition of a secluded private garden complete with a swimming pool. We were asked to completely remodel the existing property and incorporate a new extension to maximise light and open-plan living that would feel connected to the generous garden.

The clients presented us with a brief to keep the overall interior structure uncomplicated and approach the design with minimalism in mind. On the ground floor, the large main bedroom now lies at the front of the house. Towards the rear of the property, the open-plan kitchen-living area enjoys views out onto the surrounding greenery. To highlight this unique feature, we added glazed sliding doors with an impressive low-hanging aluminium canopy to foster a direct connection to the verdant surroundings. This multi-use space functions as the heart of the home, providing the perfect area for everyday family life and entertaining with a dining area, fireplace, and projector screen.

The staircase retains its original position but features the new addition of roof light to brighten the space. Upstairs, the first floor holds two further generous-sized bedrooms and a family bathroom. Here, the interiors have been kept equally minimal and retain original features such as the oak floorboards.

To the rear of the seventy-foot garden, a garden studio has been added for use as a home office.

Material design

Inspired by the Case Study Houses of Palm Springs, a large aluminium canopy wraps around the exterior to provide shelter and offer uninterrupted views of the garden.
