Project description

A flat in the iconic Lonsdale Square was presented to us in need of a facelift. When the Grade II listed house in Islington, North London was converted into flats during the middle of last century, all of the original Victorian features were stripped out and the layout changed. We approached the design and refurbishment with the aim to restore the apartment back to its former glory.

Throughout the design process we wanted to create a space that allowed the proportions of the property to shine, whilst still being reminiscent of its past. Opening up the kitchen and living room alongside taking advantage of the large windows (historically the flat is situated where the principle reception rooms were), natural light has been optimised to create a bright and airy feel. The reintroduction of ornate features such as cornices, architraves, panel beading and high skirting boards helped bring the apartment back to its former splendour. Through research and working with plaster specialists the details are evocative of the building’s and adjoining properties history.

The kitchen and bathroom were fitted out and reconfigured, both being minimal to not distract from the rest of the space. White washed walls and parquet flooring has been introduced which in turn compliments all the forms of panelling.

Material design

Minimalism of the flat mixes nicely with the ornate ceiling rose and panelling details. Traditional high skirting boards and large doors have been installed to draw attention back to Victorian period features.
