Jacob's Flat

A Light-Filled Edwardian Flat in North London of Impressive Proportions

Project description

When the client found the property, it had fallen into disrepair and was in need of a lot of care and attention. We were approached to renovate and reconfigure the interior of the large flat to ensure the property’s full potential and establish new spaces for living and entertaining.

The property's internal layout was in need of improvement and it was evident at the start of the project that there was an excellent opportunity to maximise the interior spaces. On the first floor, we relocated the main staircase to the loft to create a large open-plan room that now forms the kitchen and living area. This is a particularly impressive space, with abundant light from the original Edwardian sash windows and a sought-after quantity of space — a particular rarity in London apartments. A bright yellow kitchen island brings a pop of colour to the room, forming a sun-filled and welcoming space.

Beyond this, the hallway leads to two of the property’s bedrooms and the main staircase. Plywood clads the hallway, winding up and around to form the staircase to the second floor. A guest bathroom has been discreetly positioned beneath the staircase to not detract from the plywood facade.

On the second floor, the former loft area has been completely converted to create a new quirky space with a pitched roof and large dormer windows on either side, accompanied by large roof lights to maximise the use of natural light. On the second floor, two further bedrooms and a main bathroom complete the space. The palette of materials has been carefully considered, with plywood for the bespoke built-in storage, and terrazzo in the main bathroom.

Material design

Plywood has been used to form the staircase up to the second floor. Providing both high strength and dimensional stability, the material also has a uniquely tactile finish. Here, the material is also used to clad the walls of the staircase, arranged beautifully around the small existing aperture.
