In North London, a Family Home with a Minimal Glass Box Extension

Our clients gave us a brief to transform the existing property with a full house refurbishment to accommodate their growing young family.

“Paul Archer helped us to make our dream family home a reality. They understood our “must haves” perfectly and had the vision and expertise to add lots of “nice to haves” which have elevated our home into a very special place to live. We particularly enjoy the sense of light that they have brought into each level of our home, creating beautiful spaces for our young family to come together. The team at Paul Archer guided us through the process from start to finish with diligence, patience and good humour – we are thrilled with the end result”.

Project description

Our clients gave us a brief to transform the existing property with a full house refurbishment to accommodate their growing young family. The property initially featured a tired side infill extension. We repurposed the existing plot by opening-up the existing galley kitchen and knocking through to create one open space, connecting the kitchen, dining, and living spaces. An oversized glass pivot door leads out into the rear garden complimenting the minimal glazed roof that was added to the side infill, ensuring the room is now flooded with daylight. The glazing projects out beyond the rear wall of the house onto the patio creating a minimalist glass snug.

On the lower ground floor, a storage cellar space now houses essential amenities such as the plant and utility room, along with the addition of a playroom. The floor has been lowered to enable additional access to the property. Entering on the ground floor, the main hallway leads up to the primary living spaces and down to the lower ground floor kitchen and dining area.

Through the upper floors of the house, the master bedroom is accompanied by an ensuite, with additional bedrooms arranged around a family bathroom. The second floor opens-up into the roof space and now houses a study area and separate living area, complete with an additional bedroom and bathroom. This space was designed specifically to offer a comfortable space for guests and visiting family members. Roof lights ensure each of the upper-level spaces retains the abundance of light found within the lower levels of the property.

Material design

The glass box extension is a purposefully minimal addition to the rear of the property, creating a quiet corner of the living space, perfect for reading and relaxing and offering the sense of being outside while inside.
